de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid
La Tierra conserva en sus estratos la memoria de los cuerpos, los gestos y las culturas que la han habitado. GAIA. Escultura entre el Cuerpo y el Territorio nace de la convicción de que la práctica artística puede revelar estas conexiones profundas entre materia, paisaje y experiencia humana, generando nuevas formas de conocimiento y de relación con el mundo.
El grupo reúne investigadores, artistas y docentes interesados en explorar los vínculos entre escultura, patrimonio cultural, arqueología, artesanía, biomateriales, territorio y tecnologías emergentes. Desde los procesos materiales ancestrales vinculados a la piedra, la cerámica, el metal o las fibras naturales, hasta las posibilidades que ofrecen la fabricación digital, la impresión 3D y los nuevos materiales sostenibles, nuestras investigaciones examinan cómo el arte contribuye a la construcción de memoria, identidad y sostenibilidad.
A través de proyectos de investigación-creación, publicaciones científicas, congresos internacionales, exposiciones e intervenciones en el paisaje, GAIA promueve el diálogo entre arte, ciencia y tecnología, impulsando la conservación, activación y reinterpretación crítica del patrimonio cultural material e inmaterial. El grupo entiende la escultura como una herramienta para investigar las relaciones entre cuerpo y territorio, pasado y futuro, tradición e innovación, contribuyendo a afrontar los desafíos culturales, sociales y ecológicos del presente.

Pablo de Arriba del Amo
Pablo de Arriba del Amo is Professor and former Head of the Department of Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Complutense University of Madrid, where he has taught since 1990. He holds a BA in Fine Arts, specialising in Sculpture, and a PhD awarded Cum Laude for his dissertation Formal Issues in the Sculptural Representation of the Human Figure in Motion. Since 1988, he has been a member of the national body of Professors of Arts and Crafts Schools.
His academic and artistic work focuses on sculpture, the representation of the human figure, spatial form and movement, while also incorporating digital fabrication technologies and contemporary sculptural practices. Throughout his career, he has combined teaching, research and artistic production, contributing to the development of sculpture education and research in Spain.

Valèrie Stephanie de la Dehesa Barbé
Valerie Stephanie de la Dehesa is an artist, researcher and Associate Professor in the Department of Sculpture at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). Her work explores the intersections between performance, installation, body and territory, with a particular focus on ecofeminism, material symbolism and collective artistic practices.
Her research stems from her doctoral thesis, Vegetal Processes in the Female Body: Material Symbolism Through Art, and is developed through exhibitions, curatorial projects and site-specific interventions presented in national and international institutions. She combines artistic practice, academic research and teaching, promoting interdisciplinary approaches that connect contemporary art, landscape and social engagement.

Montaña Galán Caballero
Montaña Galán Caballero holds a PhD in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid, where she is Associate Professor in the Department of Painting and Conservation-Restoration. Her academic and professional work focuses on sculpture, cultural heritage and conservation-restoration, combining research with the intervention and study of historic sculptural ensembles.
Alongside her teaching and research activities, she has participated in numerous heritage restoration projects for museums, public institutions and dioceses. Her interests also include portraiture, commemorative medal design and the relationships between sculpture, memory and territory, areas she develops through both academic research and artistic practice.

Ana Esther Balboa González
Ana Esther Balboa González holds a PhD in Sculpture from the Complutense University of Madrid (2006) and combines artistic practice, teaching and research in the fields of sculpture, landscape and territory. She has taught at CES Felipe II, U-tad and Rey Juan Carlos University, while actively coordinating inter-university collaborations and research projects.
Her work is linked to the research groups GIAPHE, GAIA and CUVPAC, with a particular focus on sculptural processes, the vegetal body and digital documentation techniques. She is also co-director of Conversaciones con el Paisaje, an artistic research project dedicated to site-specific interventions and contemporary sculptural practices in natural and cultural environments.

Francisco Gómez Jarillo
Francisco Gómez Jarillo is Head of the Department of Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), where he has been teaching since 2016. He has also been Professor of Form Analysis at Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio (UAX) since 1999 and previously taught at Rey Juan Carlos University. Alongside his academic career, he combines artistic practice with exhibition curatorship and the promotion of urban sketching as one of the coordinators of Urban Sketchers Spain.
His research focuses on sculptural techniques and experimental negative casting processes using hydraulic binders and polymer moulds, exploring material transformation through sublimation and dissolution. His work bridges sculpture, drawing and technical innovation, and he has participated in numerous research projects, exhibitions and academic initiatives in collaboration with universities and cultural institutions.

Marta Linaza Iglesias
Marta Linaza Pérez holds a PhD in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid and is Associate Professor at Rey Juan Carlos University, where she teaches in the Degree in Fine Arts and the Master's Programme in Contemporary Artistic Practices. Her research and artistic practice focus on the relationships between landscape, territory and vegetal matter, with a particular interest in site-specific interventions and environmental art.
She is co-director of the long-running artistic research project Conversaciones con el Paisaje, developed in collaboration with museums, cultural institutions and natural spaces in Spain and abroad. Alongside her academic work, she maintains an active exhibition practice, participating in national and international projects that explore the intersections between ecology, memory and contemporary sculptural practices.

Ana Olano Sans
Ana Olano Sans is Associate Professor in the Department of Sculpture and Artistic Education at the Complutense University of Madrid, where she has been teaching since 2007. Her artistic and research practice focuses on natural stone sculpture, sculptural processes and the relationship between material, space and the human body, combining abstract and figurative approaches.
Alongside her teaching and research activities, she has coordinated artistic projects, exhibitions and educational initiatives, while maintaining an active artistic career with participation in numerous sculpture symposia, biennials and international exhibitions. Her work explores the dialogue between traditional sculptural techniques, contemporary practice and material experimentation.

Jorge Caminero Gabernet
Jorge Caminero is an architect and researcher whose work focuses on the intersections between architecture, landscape, sustainability and embodied spatial experience. He holds a Master's Degree in Advanced Architectural Projects from the School of Architecture of Madrid (ETSAM-UPM), where he is currently pursuing a PhD in Architectural Design with the research project Mediated Matter – Embodied Cognition.
He has taught at ETSAM and has been a visiting lecturer in postgraduate programmes on healthy habitats, bioconstruction and sustainable architecture. He is also the founder of Biohabitat, an architecture and technology practice dedicated to ecological design and positive carbon balance solutions. His work explores the relationships between architecture, environmental design, natural materials and innovative approaches to spatial experience.

Ruth Remartínez Martínez
Ruth Remartínez Martínez holds a degree in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid, specialising in the Conservation and Restoration of Sculpture. She worked as an honorary collaborator in the Department of Painting and later as a lecturer at CES Felipe II (2005–2014), where she taught courses in Conservation-Restoration, Painting and Drawing. She has also taught at Rey Juan Carlos University and currently lectures in the Degree in Fundamentals of Architecture.
Her research and teaching focus on art education, craft practices, artistic memory, materiality and social responsibility through participatory and collaborative methodologies. She has collaborated on research projects such as Artefactos de Carnaval and Conversaciones con el Paisaje, and regularly contributes to seminars and training programmes exploring the intersections between art, education and social inclusion.

Mónica Martínez-Bordiú
Mónica Martínez Bordiú holds a PhD in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid. Her artistic and research practice is situated at the intersection of sculpture, landscape and ecology, exploring the relationships between art, nature and environmental transformation through site-specific and process-based methodologies.
She directs the artistic research project La Naturaleza del Paisaje, a platform for contemporary artistic creation linked to the Cabañeros National Park. Her work investigates the concept of the expanded landscape, understanding territory as an active and material agent in artistic practice, while integrating ecological concerns and interdisciplinary approaches that connect contemporary art, environmental thought and scientific knowledge.

Sergio Montoya Rasero
Sergio Montoya is a specialist in advanced technologies for the management and documentation of cultural heritage, with training in digital technologies applied to cultural heritage, digitalisation, 3D reproduction and rapid prototyping. He graduated in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid and completed further training at the Scuola del Marmo di Carrara and the Escuela del Mármol de Andalucía.
He is currently developing his doctoral research at the Complutense University of Madrid, focusing on the incorporation of new technologies into artistic and sculptural processes. His work combines traditional sculptural practice with digital fabrication, 3D technologies and the application of contemporary methodologies to heritage and artistic production.

Nuria Roncero González
Nuria Roncero is Associate Professor in the Department of Sculpture at the Complutense University of Madrid and a Fine Arts graduate from the same institution. She combines her teaching activity with an extensive professional career in artistic production, set design and woodworking, collaborating on projects for film, television, advertising and the performing arts.
Specialised in artistic woodworking and sculptural fabrication, her practice bridges traditional craftsmanship and contemporary artistic production. Her research and teaching interests focus on material processes, sculpture, technical knowledge and the transmission of craft-based practices within contemporary art education.

Gloria SantaCruz Tarjuelo
PhD in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid, with a doctoral dissertation focused on artworks created exclusively with living plants. A bronze sculptor for over 25 years, her work has been represented by galleries and presented at major art fairs, including ESTAMPA, in collaboration with galleries such as Raquel Ponce, ACuadros, and Javier Román.
She has received several national and international awards in sculpture, printmaking, and artist books, and has exhibited internationally, including at Tama Art University (Japan) and the Macay Museum (Mexico). In 2014, she founded and directs The Sea Urchins Container, an artist residency and independent publishing initiative based in Jávea, Spain, which has participated in leading art book and contemporary art fairs in Madrid, Valencia, and Lisbon.
She is currently an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Complutense University of Madrid, where she conducts research within the Educational Innovation Project on alabaster techniques.
Research interests: eco-art and living matter, women, environment and nature, migration and cultural identity, contemporary sculpture, collaborative artistic practices, and the internationalisation of art education and university-community partnerships.

Javier Mañero Rodicio
PhD in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid, awarded the Extraordinary Doctoral Prize. He was the recipient of a prestigious FPI Research Fellowship, including a research stay at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA), Paris, and was accredited as Associate Professor in 2009. Since 2001, he has taught at several Spanish universities, specialising in sculpture, artistic projects, and artistic anatomy. He joined the Department of Sculpture at the Complutense University of Madrid in 2015.
Alongside his academic career, he has worked professionally in the performing arts, designing stage sets and producing sculptural and pictorial works for theatre and exhibition projects. His artistic practice includes gallery exhibitions, public sculpture commissions, and site-specific interventions.
His research and teaching explore an expanded understanding of sculpture, combining artistic practice, critical theory, and pedagogical innovation through publications, research projects, and public art initiatives.

Aris Papagueorguiu García
A. Papagueorguiu García holds a PhD in Fine Arts and a Higher Diploma in Conservation and Restoration from the School of Conservation and Restoration of Madrid. She has been a lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Complutense University of Madrid since 1999 and previously taught at CES Felipe II (UCM) in Aranjuez.
Her research focuses on printmaking, digital heritage and museum studies, with particular interest in graphic arts collections and the application of digital technologies to cultural dissemination and education. Alongside her academic work, she has participated in research and innovation projects and has maintained an active artistic practice through exhibitions in painting and printmaking.

Maria Mallo Zurdo
María Mallo Zurdo is an architect, researcher and educator whose work explores the intersections between architecture, nature, craftsmanship and digital fabrication. She holds a PhD in Architecture from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), where her doctoral research, Radiolarian Systems: Derived Geometries and Architectures, investigated biomimetic structures inspired by microscopic marine organisms.
Her practice combines computational design, material experimentation and traditional craft techniques, focusing on natural geometries and bio-inspired design processes. Alongside her professional and artistic activity, she has taught at the Polytechnic University of Madrid and the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED), and has exhibited her work internationally in the fields of architecture, art and design.

Darío Lanza Vidal
Darío Lanza Vidal is an International PhD in Information and Communication Technologies and Associate Professor in the Department of Sculpture at the Complutense University of Madrid, where he also coordinates the Master's Degree in Contemporary Sculpture. His research and artistic practice focus on the intersection of contemporary art and digital technologies, exploring their potential for artistic production and visual culture.
Before joining academia, he worked for seven years at Next Limit Technologies, contributing to the development of the fluid simulation software RealFlow, recognised with the Technical Achievement Academy Award (Oscar) in 2008. His work has been exhibited internationally in cities including New York, Los Angeles, London, Athens, Hong Kong and Cardiff.

Carmen Hidalgo de Cisneros
Carmen Hidalgo de Cisneros Wilckens is a visual artist, researcher and lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Complutense University of Madrid, where she has taught since 2002. She holds a PhD in Fine Arts from UCM and an MFA in Multimedia and Computer Animation. Her professional career combines artistic practice, teaching and research, with extensive experience in digital art, graphic design, illustration and multimedia production.
She is a member of the research groups The Artist’s Book as the Materialisation of Thought (UCM) and Visual Language and Applied Design (University of Málaga). Her work explores the intersections between artist books, printmaking, drawing, digital narratives and visual culture, and has been exhibited internationally in Europe, Africa and the Americas.

Ricardo Fernández Martín
Ricardo Fernández Martín is an artist, researcher and lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), where he teaches in the Department of Design and Image. He is a member of the research group GAIA: Sculpture between Body and Territory, exploring the relationships between art, space and materiality through interdisciplinary approaches.
His artistic and research practice focuses on contemporary visual culture, audiovisual experimentation and the interaction between sound, image and perception. Alongside his teaching and research activities, he has participated in exhibitions, conferences and innovation projects, developing work that combines artistic production, sensory experience and experimental methodologies.

Susana Fernández Blanco
Susana F. Blanco holds a PhD in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid (2021), awarded Cum Laude with International Mention. She is currently Assistant Professor at the Royal University for Women (Bahrain), where she teaches in the College of Art and Design and supervises Master's dissertations in Drawing & Painting and Design Management.
Her research and artistic practice focus on the use of beeswax and organic materials in contemporary sculpture, exploring their sculptural, ecological and symbolic dimensions through sustainable and interdisciplinary approaches. With extensive academic and professional experience in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, she combines artistic research, teaching and creative practice, integrating traditional techniques such as encaustic painting with contemporary concerns related to gender, territory, sustainability and digital fabrication technologies.

David Llorente Sanz
David Llorente Sanz is an artist, lecturer and researcher specialising in the intersections between sculpture, digital technologies and artificial intelligence. He holds a PhD in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid, where he also completed a Master’s Degree in Art and Creation Research and graduated with an Extraordinary Degree Award in Fine Arts.
His work explores the dialogue between traditional sculptural practice and emerging technologies, integrating tools such as 3D printing, photogrammetry, digital modelling and generative systems into artistic production and research. As a member of the research group GAIA: Sculpture between Body and Territory, he investigates the impact of artificial intelligence and digital environments on contemporary sculptural languages and hybrid artistic practices.
His work has been exhibited in museums, universities, festivals and cultural institutions, and has received awards in sculpture, photography and painting. Alongside his artistic activity, he develops research and innovation projects related to digital media, creative technologies and art education.

Andrés Nortes Nolasco
Antonio Nortes Nolasco is a sculptor, researcher and lecturer at the Complutense University of Madrid, where he has taught sculpture since 2002. He holds a degree in Fine Arts (1995) and a PhD (2009) from the Complutense University. Alongside his academic career, he has maintained an independent sculptural practice, specialising in artistic casting, microfusion techniques and the application of digital technologies to sculptural production.
His work combines traditional sculptural processes with computer-aided design, CNC milling and digital fabrication technologies. He has participated in international projects and workshops, including the European Union PAOF programme in Uruguay, and has taken part in numerous international sculpture festivals, particularly in the fields of stone carving and snow sculpture.

Jesús Francisco Bolumburu García
Jesús Francisco Bolumburu is a researcher and artist whose work focuses on Art Theory, Visual Arts and Contemporary Art. He studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Complutense University of Madrid, where he actively participated in student representation bodies and later completed the Master’s Degree in Art and Creation Research (MIAC).
His research explores the relationships between contemporary artistic practices, visual culture and critical theory. He has participated in collaborative research projects and exhibitions, including the collective exhibition associated with the MIAC programme. He is also co-author of the research project Artefactos escénicos para arte urbano, reflecting his interest in interdisciplinary and experimental approaches to contemporary artistic production.

Paula García Fernández
Paula García Fernández is an Artificial Intelligence Engineer and researcher specialising in computer vision, geospatial data processing and applied machine learning. Her work focuses on the development and optimisation of deep learning models for land-cover classification, spatial analysis and the processing of large-scale environmental datasets.
She is currently pursuing doctoral research in applied artificial intelligence and digital reconstruction, exploring the integration of AI methodologies with digital modelling and spatial representation. Her expertise spans the full machine learning pipeline, from data preparation and model development to evaluation, deployment and cloud-based applications.
